Can so-called "development" be forced upon a group of people who seem to be perfectly content with their current surroundings? This BBC news article talks of the proposed venture by the mining giant Vedanta to strip the hills of Orissa for bauxite and almost surely destroy the surrounding environment and with it the tribal Dongria's way of life. Harsh and primitive their life may be, but in many ways they seem to be ok with it. As with many others before, we all know how this story will end.
