Atanu Dey makes a compelling case for abolishing subsidies provided by the Indian government towards the Haj pilgrimage (a petition to this effect has been accepted to the SC...albeit it looks like some hardliner filed for it). And I completely am with him on this as an idea, although I would like to think that my reasons would be slightly different. It is indeed very discriminatory, in my opinion, to promote such practices to sort of appease a particular community, and not extend the same privileges to others (I know...this may not be very convincing nor is it practical:)) despite whatever real or perceived difficulties they might be facing. I also think the idea of voluntary contributions to this subsidy would also never work out given the mindset of the general population about Muslims, especially in today's world. Rs 280 cr is no small change and could be definitely pumped into more productive channels that can create a more positive change in their communities. Although I'm too lazy to quote references now..its a well-known fact that Muslims as a community in India, have a higher than average rate of unemployment, lack of education, etc.....all of which could use some of the money provided in such inane subsidies to move away from status quo.
